Ogun State Government has urged residents to maintain clean environment for healthy living.

The government hereby promised to continue to preserve the environment that would impact on peoples health.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Ola Oresanya stated this at the World Environment Day with the theme “Only One Earth”, held in Abeokuta on Tuesday.

Oresanya noted that maintaining the environment required a collective responsibility of all the residents, and that the government would continue to sustain good environment.

He said: The world environment day was introduced by world leaders to discuss the social, political and economic challenges the environment is facing with the intention of addressing them.

“It is to promote healthier life for future generation and speedy attainment of the sustainable development goals through progressive local actions.”

Furthermore, he explained that according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Ogun is rapidly growing to become the most industrialised state in Nigeria.

He noted that the positive development was already threatening the rich biodiversity and impacting the fragile ecosystem adversely.

“It is therefore imperative for us to preserve nature at all cost. The World Environment day celebration affords us opportunity to raise awareness about the most pressing local environmental challenges.

“The state government will stimulate citizen’s education on the negative effects of their actions on the environment,” he said.

Moreover, the guest lecturer at the event, Professor Oladele Osibanjo, ably represented by Dr. Olumide Onafeso remarked that it was important to play serious attention to climate change, saying that it remained the greatest challenge to the health of mankind.
