Team Nigeria Departs For World U-20 Athletics Championship In Kenya

A total of 24 athletes have departed the country on Sunday for the World Junior Athletics Championship billed for Nyayo Sports Complex, Nairobi, Kenya, from August 17th – 22nd, 2021.

Team Nigeria left the shore of the country through Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Federal Capital Territory for the world event.

Four other athletes from the United States America (USA) are expected to join the contingent in Nairobi for the world event whereby over 973 athletes across the world are anticipated to take part in 44 events.

President, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa noted that this is another unique opportunity for a new set of young athletes to prove their talent at the world level.

He said: “Once they do well, it will be a great transition from the more established ones to the new generations.

“These are new generations of Nigeria track and field. It’s an opportunity for some of the athletes who missed out from the just concluded Tokyo Olympic Games to showcase their talents.

“Nigeria should be hopeful that these sets of young athletes will bring medals from the world athletics championships in Kenya.”

It could be recalled that the junior athletes had their camping exercise in Asaba, Delta State, while Team Nigeria was participating at the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
