Ogun Kick-Boxing Coach, Olufunke Oguntuyi Buried In Abeokuta

Tears flow as friends, colleagues and relatives witnessed the remains of Ogun State Sports Council (OGSSC), Head Coach of Kickboxing, Ms Olufunke Josephine Oguntuyi who was laid to rest in Abeokuta on Wednesday.

The late coach who sudden death occurred last Saturday in Ilorin, Kwara State capital was buried at Sacred Cherubim and Seraphim Ebenezer Cemetery, at Aladesanmi Area, Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

Oguntuyi who led two state athletes, Augusta Okonkwo and Odunayo Ogunade to win each gold medal respectively at the 1st Barrister Ibrahim Atanda Kickboxing Invitation and Zonal Championship, where she also officiated in the competition was confirmed dead on Saturday 31st, July 2021, in her hotel room in Ilorin.

The sports council management team and staff were at the burial site to pay their last respect to Oguntuyi, one of the best coaches who has impacted positively in the lives of many athletes during her lifetime.

It could be recalled that her corpse was discovered in her hotel room after several search was made to locate her whereabouts when she failed to report for duty as at 12 noon, when all the other officials had converged for the commencement of the final competition.

The three days championship which kick started on Thursday, July 29th, 2021, was to end on Saturday, July 31st, but due to the unfortunate incident, the final was held on Sunday, August 1st, 2021.

Her corpse after an autopsy was transported from Ilorin to Abeokuta and deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021 before being buried today.

Moreover, the late Oguntuyi joined the Ogun State Sports Council in April 2007 as a kickboxing athletes, and won several laurels for the state. She also served in the coaching department as the head coach of Kickboxing since 2018 till her demise.

She had Bsc in Human Kinetics at Taye Solarin University of Education (TASUED) Ijagun; Certificate in Kickboxing Coach and Umpire in 2013, and in July 2018, she attained Certificate in IOC/NOC Sports Administration Course for National Association for Physical and Heath Education Recreation Sports Dance (NAPHER-SD).

The late coach Oguntuyi is a native of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, and is survived by aged father, sister and brother.
