The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Ogun State chapter has revealed the reason for embarking on a five-day warning strike.
The strike was announced after the emergency Congress of the Union held on Monday, August 8, 2022 to consider the response and compliance to the resolutions reached at the tripartite meeting held on 18th July 2022.
At the meeting were Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor A. Abayomi Management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (Mapoly), Abeokuta and the Unions in response to persistent issues contiguous with the welfare of the Union members and the sustenance of MAPOLY in consonant with communiqué of ASUP Congress dated 19th July 2022 where these issues were first deliberated and resolved on an 8-points resolutions that were sent to your office by the Union.
In a Communique jointly signed by the ASUP Chairman and General Secretary, Babatunde Osifalujo and Tomisi Adegunle issued on Monday cited lack of financial capability of the management of MAPOLY and inability of Ogun State Government to fulfil their promises on the domestication of the Polytechnic Act (2019) and the constitution of Governing Council as reason for the strike for the government and management to accomplish its promises.
The Communique recalled that the Congress observed and deliberated on the following: “The union revisited its deliberations in suspending its planned industrial action earlier scheduled to commence at midnight of Tuesday, 19th July 2022 relying on the agreement reached at the tripartite meeting of 18th July, 2022.
“The resolutions of the union as contained in the communiqué dated 19th July, 2022 were reappraised.
“The response of the Ogun State government to resolve only an item of the entire undertakings freely made to the union at the expiration of the timeline on 5th August, 2022.
“The inability of the management of the polytechnic to put in place strategic plans to solve some internal challenges as mandated by the commissioner due to its precarious situation and financial incapability.”
“The challenges posed to welfare of members due to non-payment of staff salaries which had ceased to be paid since May 2022.
“Consequently, the meeting resolved that in view of lack of financial capability of the Management of Mapoly and the inability of the Ogun State Government to fulfil their promises on the domestication of the Polytechnic Act (2019) and the constitution of Governing Council, the Union hereby issue an immediate five (5) days warning strike for the Government and Management to accomplish its promises.
“We remain committed to the upliftment of education in Ogun State,” the communique stated.
