Tokyo 2020: Latifat Powerlifting Gold Excites Ogun Sports Council

Management of Ogun State Sports Council (OGSSC) has sent congratulatory message to Latifat Tijani, the first Nigerian gold medalist at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Japan.

Tijani, the Ogun State born athlete on Thursday morning wrote Nigeria name in gold in the para-powerlifting 45kg category, after initial disappointment whereby her 105kg was disallowed by the officials.

This was contained in a statement signed by the OGSSC Director of Sports, Mrs. Folakemi Iyabode Rotimi, and made available to sports writers in Abeokuta by the council Head, Public Relations Officer, Bola Giwa on Thursday.

In her message, she expressed the management and staff joy on the good news which was a clear affirmation of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun sports development across the state.

She said: “It is with great joy when I heard the good news of Latifat Tijani winning gold medal at the para-powerlifting event in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games in Japan on Thursday.

“Her feat is a clear demonstration of His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun efforts in developing sports across the state. Ever since Governor Abiodun assumption of office, sports has taken a new dimension, and this has surfaced in far away Japan.

“On behalf of the entire management and staff of Ogun State Sports Council, I congratulate and felicitate with Latifat, as she emerged the first Nigerian athlete to pick medal for Nigeria in para-powerlifting event.

“On the same note, I applaud her coach, Mrs Oluwakemi Oyebola and wish them well and to win more gold medals as the games progress. I pray that their journey to and fro will be filled with God’s mercy.”
