Against all odds, Team Ogun recorded a sterling performance at the 20th National Sports Festival in Benin City, Edo State with a total of seventy eight medals.
The Team Ogun under the leadership of Mrs. Folakemi Oluwarotimi Iyabo, Director of Sports, Ogun State Sports Council put in their best to emerge among the top ten states on the medals table at the festival declared closed in Wednesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium.
In spite of the lackluster preparation towards the sports festival tagged ‘Edo 2020’, the state athletes put behind the disappointment back home to win sixteen gold, twenty three silver and thirty nine bronze medals in various events.
With this laudable result, Team Ogun was ranked eight in the medals table proudly dominated by Team Delta who won 158 gold, 116 silver and 110 bronze medals, and closely followed by host state, Team Edo with 129 gold, 104 silver and 108 bronze medals, just as Team Bayelsa settled for third place with 56 gold, 55 silver and 58 bronze medals.
Team Rivers was in fourth position having won 33 gold, 34 silver and 61 bronze medals while fifth place went to Team Lagos who raked in 32 gold, 40 silver and 54 bronze medals just as Team Oyo had 31 gold, 30 silver and 42 bronze medals to place sixth.
It was Akwa Ibom on seventh position with 20 gold, 24 silver and 44 bronze medals, thus be ahead of Team Ogun in the medals chart. Team Kano with 11 gold, 22 silver and 33 bronze medals landed in ninth position while Team Imo completed the top ten with 10 gold, 13 silver and 26 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, at the bottom four were Team Kebbi on 34th position with one silver and five bronze medals, followed by Team Adamawa with one silver and one bronze, while Team Sokoto placed 36th with three bronze medals just as Team Taraba occupied the last position with two bronze medals.
It could be recalled that all the 36 states in Nigeria as well as Federal Capital Territory took part in the two weeks sporting events in Benin City.
