It was bumper harvests of medals for Team Edo weightlifters as the 20th National Sports Festival comes to an end today inside Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin City, Edo State
Team Edo weightlifters in their usual manner in the annals of sports festival recorded rewarding gold an silver medals for the state.
Fatima Musa (81KG), Joy Omokhuale (87Kg) and Joke Jayeola (71 Kg) won a combined six gold, and three silver medals for the host state in the women’s event.
In the men event, Benjamin Agboghidi (109kg) and Gideon Aigbefo (89Kg) won three gold each while Yakubu Suleiman (81 Kg) won two gold, and one silver for Edo just as special athlete Omogbai Daniel won two gold medals in the powerlifting event.
In another development, Christian Onojakpor who made his festival games last appearance capped his reign with a bronze for Edo in the 102 Kg.
Moreover, Dirisu Oseni who began his weightlifting career just six months ago went home with bronze medal, to the amazement of his coach and other lifters.
Speaking after the competition, Dirisu expressed deep appreciation, and ascribed his first appearance success to the Head Coach, Edo Weightlifting Association, Helen Asemota who has been a big motivator to him.
