Dr. Matthew Orhiakhi played his way to victory at the Mavericks Kitty Group Monthly Mug/Birthday Kitty, August edition held on Tuesday at Benin Club Golf Section (BCGS), Edo State.
Dr. Oriakhi, fmr President of Benin Club 1931 compensated himself with a net score of 71 to win the MKG kitty having missed out on the medals chat at Chief Sam Awiaka @ 70 Birthday Tournament concluded over the weekend.
In the second position was AVM Al-Hassan Aliyu (rtd) with 76 net while the trio of Chairman of MKG, Elder Monday Ikhureigbe; Prof. Anthony Emina, and fmr. President of Benin Club 1931, Pharmacist Fred Iboi settled for joint third with 77 net.
Similarly, July edition winner, Gen. Oscar Iyare (rtd) won the best gross award with a total of 88 gross having failed to add this August edition to his trophies cabinet.
Meanwhile, a total of 35 members teed-off at the birthday kitty to celebrate August celebrants. They were Gen. Paul Edomwande (rtd); Mr. Lucky Osarenkhoe; Mr. Otiotio Okpako, and Chief (Sir) Sam Awiaka, aka Transformer who turned 70 with a lavished birthday tournament.
While delivering winner’s speech, Dr. Oriakhi noted: “I don’t want to play today due to my schedule busy at work, but Barr. Edeki called me to come and play three balls. So I played with him, Percy Okojie Esq., and myself.
“As the game went on, my front nine was forty, while back nine was forty three, total of 83 gross. I wanted to play par under but due to my handicap 12, I couldn’t make it.
“I want to acknowledge my Technical Adviser, Gen Oscar. This game was to avenge for missing out on medals chat at the Chief Sam Awiaka birthday tournament having played 72 net, but couldn’t win anything. I really enjoyed the cordiality and cooperation among our members.”
Meanwhile, Chairman of the kitty group, Elder Ikhureigbe affirmed: “The day is another record breakout we have 35 members in attendance to celebrate our members born in the month of August.
“our of them had the birthdays in August and today is to round-off the ceremony and again have our usual kitty game and the best player, Dr. Oriakhi won the event. It shows partnership, relationship, friendship, and brotherhood as part of it.
“It just shows who we are, we love golf and play golf we had eight players winning across five categories at the Chief Sam Awiaka @ 70 birthday tournament. So, it was Mavericks prize all.
“We played twice a week and encourage people to come and play competitiveness. So, we play competitive golf and the results are showing in the prizes that we are also winning.
“At Mavericks, we will continue to be doing this because apart from the mental health benefits from it, everybody also want to belong to Mavericks Kitty group which has become a modest and a sort after kitty group across BCGS.”
