
Dr. Gabriel Ihenyen received a standing ovation on Tuesday as he was adjudged winner at the two-in-one golf kitty events held at Benin Club Golf Section (BCGS), Edo State.
Dr. Ihenyen (hcp 24) won the June edition of Mavericks Kitty Group Monthly Mug as well as Edward Aibangbee @ 56 Birthday Golf Kitty respectively.
To achieve this feat, he played a net score of 72 to emerge overall winner at the Mavericks Kitty Group Monthly Mug while fmr. President of Benin Club, Dr. Matthew Oriakhi who placed second beat Hon. Ero Osemwinge on count-back having both played 74 net.
Gen. Oscar Iyare (rtd.) won the best gross award with a total of 87 gross thus sent warning signal to other members of his readiness to win more trophies before the end of the year.
With this victory, Dr. Ihenyen has successfully written his name in the Mavericks Kitty Group Hall of Fame thus joined the league of past winners of the monthly mug event.
In the Edward Aibangbee Birthday Golf Kitty, Dr Ihenyen also emerged winner with same net score of 72. He beat the likes of Hon. Ero Osemwinge (hcp 18) with 74 net, and Gordon’s Imadiyi (hcp 18) who played 74 net to second and third spot respectively.
The best gross award went to the Benin Club Golf Section (BCGS,) Competition Secretary, Osazee Iyare having played 78 gross at the birthday kitty that coincidence with the monthly mug.
Similarly, the Eaglets were also part of the birthday kitty as Christopher Moses won with 74 gross while the duo of Chima Chukwu with 79 gross and Ose Efe with 82 gross settled for second and third place respectively.
In his winner’s speech, Dr Ihenyen remarked by appreciating the celebrant for the day and the kitty group members for the honour to win the two in one event.
He said: “It is double celebrations for me and my family as I also welcome my granddaughter. I am very excited to be member of Mavericks Kitty Group and being in the hall of fame. It’s a matter of skill,
“I didn’t think of winning the event, not even occur to win but just to play my game, bit God gave me victory. When I teed-off, I discovered that my front nine gross inspired me to play another good golf in my back nine.
“I return all the glory to the Almighty God for making today a reality and for written my name in the hall of fame of this great Mavericks kitty group. Thank you all once again.”
In the same vein, the celebrant, Aibangbee esq., said: “It is customary to do thanksgiving to God as the best gift to Him. I appreciate God’s favour upon my life to reach this peak of adding another year today.
“Golf is a game of gentlemen as 18th holes will determine your fate. I thank all the 41 members that played today. God will honour you all too.”
Prior to this, immediate past BCGS Secretary, Hon.Osazuwa Ehiorobo who conducted the toast for the celebrant appreciated all members of the Mavericks kitty group, while he acknowledged the golfing skill of the birthday man popularly called hole in one.
Ehiorobo hereby named Aibangbee “Gbechewood” for his exploit within the few years of being a member of the golf section and having demonstrated his golfing skill by winning trophies in the club.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of trophies and other packaged prizes to all those who excelled in various cadres while entertainment of members and guests..
Meanwhile the delicious delicacies for the birthday party was anchored by Oyeghe’s Pot, proudly owned by the fmr. BCGS Lady Captain, Princess Habiibah Oyeghe Oyarekhua.
Over sixty golfers teed-off at the Mavericks monthly mug as well as the birthday kitty in honour of the celebrant who also is a member of the group.
