Property worth millions of naira have been destroyed by heavy downpour and windstorm at Owa-Ekei Community in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Some of the victims, while counting their loses noted that if not for divine intervention, some lives would have been lost.
Meanwhile, a building located opposite the community shrine was not speared after a huge tree fell on it.
While speaking, the owner of a damaged duplex, Mrs Jennifer Ifeme said that she got to know about the disaster through a phone call from somebody.
“I received a shocking news on the phone after the rain informing me that a big tree planted in the forest opposite my building in Owa-Ekei Community has fallen on top of my twelve-bedroom duplex,” she said.
Speaking further, Mrs Ifeme, who is a native of Umunede Community, passionately appealed to members of Owa-Ekei Community to help cut down the trees so that it wiould not cause more damages to lives and property in the future.
She urged relevant authorities to ensure that such trees were cut down and forest removed to somewhere else.
“My primary aim of building the house is to help develop Ika nation and Delta State in general. The government and communities where our property are should always do something to encourage us to contribute our quotas to the growth and development of the community, local and state government,” she stated.
In a related development, residents of Owa-Alero Community in the council have been thrown into pandemonium as one of the borrow pits in the community is caving in an alarming order.
It was also gathered that about three persons have allegedly been drowned in the borrow pits recently, and that buildings located around the borrow pit are also at risk of collapsing.
